Bear Lake opened to year round fishing in 1951 to boost cisco catches. Nets were legalized for cisco from January 1 to February 15 with an 18 inch opening. limits rose from 25 to 50 after 1962. Large yearly harvests followed with netters tallying hundreds of thousands of fish at Bear Lake through the 1960s. Transplants to Lake Tahoe showed initial success, and displays at the Eastern Idaho State Fair popularized the species. Cisco meat is white and described as easy to cook in multiple ways.
