William 3B Higgins, longtime attorney and native of St George Utah, signs radio and personal appearance contracts in Hollywood. Fielding Hoopsters Meet Grace Saturday Night

The undefeated Grace basketball team visits Fielding at the local gymnasium Saturday at 8. Grace has beaten Jerome and Thatcher by wide margins and trains hard for the clash. Coach Church focuses on conditioning after holiday break to prepare for a likely subdistrict title race. A girls game between Georgetown and Fielding is set for 7 PM, with no extra charge.

Fielding High School captured its sixth win of the season by defeating Weber Ogden 41 to 39 on New Year’s Eve. Sarlo led the losers while Crawford starred for Church’s winners. The team previously beat Idaho Falls 43 to 17 and Jerome earlier, signaling a strong path toward the state tournament.

In Boise four Idaho legislators take seats as the first cohort of feminine lawmakers in the state Capitol in many years. Weed Control Funds Secured for Fort Hall Reservation

Congressman Addison T. Smith reports a special appropriation of 5000 dollars for noxious weed control on the Fort Hall Indian reservation next year. A survey shows about one hundred acres of weed infested areas scattered across unleased lands. Lessees will be required to eradicate weeds as their leases mandate.

Cache Forest annual report tallies elk and deer herds

The Cache National Forest report for Ogden indicates 681 elk and 3250 deer on the forest. Last open season saw 860 deer and 97 elk killed, with roughly 30 percent of Idaho portion deer and under ten percent in Utah portion. Predators reduced. coyotes, bobcats, and mountain lions noted with other fur bearers holding steady. Elk herd in Utah about 634 head. grazing pressures cited and range management urged.

The Agricultural Potassium Phosphate Company expands work at the Breights Canyon mine with 250 feet of tunnel retimbered and two new stopes opened. Sixteen men on two eight hour shifts, a 75 hp compressor, and a new dump near Continental Oil Tanks support a plant in San Pedro for Kreiss process fertilizer production using rotary kilns at 1100 degrees. Output targets include 40 000 tons annually for U S manufacturers and a minimum of ten cars weekly.

Boise January 6 M L Dean director of the bureau of plant at the department of agriculture announced his resignation effective at once. He served eight years promoting grading standardization and inspection in the department and earlier worked eight years in Washington and eight years in Montana.

Malad Superintendent Named Assistant State Instruction Chief

L A Thomas longtime Malad City schools superintendent was named assistant superintendent of public instruction by Myrtle R Davis. He pioneered Idaho’s first system separating fast, medium and slow students into distinct courses. Thomas is Albion Normal and University of Idaho graduate pursuing graduate work at University of Chicago. He taught in Lewisville and taught during a summer session at Southern Branch Idaho State University in Pocatello.

Forest Ranger W S Averill reported at a Grace Idaho Falls convention of the east Idaho Fish and Game Protective Association that a nine day elk season and a five day deer season were proposed. The group also backed a commission form of government for the fish and game department and approved increased license fees to fund propagation and fish screens.

Schools Resume After Holiday Vacation
