Fielding High Spartans host Montpelier Bears in a Friday night basketball clash at 8 p. m. Both teams have only preliminary games this season, with no clear strength shown, but both aim to win in what should be a worthwhile contest for spectators.
Funeral services were held at the Georgetown Ward chapel for Horace Hayes 67 who died at home. He was born April 13 1886 and had worked for the Anaconda Copper Co at Conda before farming. Surviving are his widow eight sons and daughters seven sisters and ten grandchildren. Burial followed at Georgetown cemetery.
Retail ceiling prices of 10 cents and 15 cents per pair of rubber heels have been established by the OPA for consumers who attach them to shoes at home.
Bill Nye, in the army since February 1941, received an honorable discharge and returned home. He served nineteen months in the Alaskan territory and holds two gold stars for two conflicts in which he participated.
The Bear Lake region saw its first real snow storm of the winter. Snow began Sunday morning and fell steadily through the day. By Tuesday the snow depth reached six to seven inches with no wind and temperatures dropping to 12 degrees below zero Monday night.
Mrs. John E. Hayes of Twin Falls announces Bear Lake county ranks high for 1943 with 7c net per capita in the Infantile Paralysis campaign. Idaho averaged about 3% per capita. The effort funds local aid and the National Foundation for research and care.
Mr and Mrs A P Hborn announce the marriage of their daughter Helen Rae to Pfc Dean A Larsen of Montpelier. The ceremony occurred at Salt Lake Temple with Charles Jones officiating. Attendants included Mrs P Larsen Montpelier and several relatives from Payson Paris and Salt Lake City. The newlyweds will spend the groom s furlough in Bear Lake.
A letter from Marine Joe Barfuss to Mr and Mrs Barfuss describes his Tarawa landing on the Gilbert Islands. He speaks of war’s grim realities and his desire to return home as a peaceable citizen while remaining proud to serve as a Marine.
Funeral services were held at Fish Haven for Mrs Marguerite Goebel Pugmire who died in Montpelier December list. She was born January 14 1887 in Richmond Utah and moved to Bear Lake as a girl. Survived by four sons, two daughters, eight grandchildren, a brother and sister. Activities included opening songs and several speakers. Interment in Montpelier Cemetery with pallbearers named.
The Office of Price Administration says home sugar rations stay the same for about two and a half months. Sugar stamp 30 in War Ration Book Four becomes valid January 6 and allows buying five pounds of sugar through the end of March. Stamp 29 remains usable through January 5.
Eligibility for stove rationing has been broadened. A consumer with four heating or cooking stoves that cannot be used satisfactorily is now eligible for a ration certificate. Certificates may also be issued for stoves to heat premises where essential community activities occur and to landlords for the use of eligible tenants.
The OPA will issue special gasoline rations to servicemen recuperating from illness or wounds. Eligible personnel present leave papers and a medical officer’s letter certifying that car travel is essential for recovery, to the local rationing board.
The ledger lists direct redemption deadlines for various ration stamps. Gasoline A-9 coupons run through January 21 1944, Sugar Stamp 29 Book Four through January 15, Shoes stamps 18 Book One and Airplane sheet stamps 1 Book Three each good for one pair, Meats Brown stamps R and 8 through January 29, Brown stamp T moving to processed foods with green stamps D HE and F in Book Four valid through January 20, Green stamps D E F in Book Four likewise through January 20.
Mrs Weldron L Smith of Cakeville Wyoming and Mrs Nels Hairup of St Charles confirm that State Sergeant Marion Lee Smith has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for gallantry in action. Smith serves as an engineer and turret gunner with the American Air Force in England aboard a flying craft.
January quotas show a continued tire and tube shortage with 276,629 new truck tires and 230,400 new truck tubes allotted, each down from December by 13,890 and 27,787 respectively. Farm equipment tires and tubes also fall, reflecting colder month demand, with tire and tube quotas down by 4,600 and 9,200 respectively.
Funeral services for Mrs. Maria Pendrey 89 who died December 27 were held in the Paris Second Ward chapel with Bishop O H Grimmett officiating. Members of the ward sang several hymns and remarks were given by church leaders. The grave was dedicated by Elder W Smith Hoge and funeral arrangements were directed by F M Williams Mortuary. Pendrey leaves five grandsons and two great grandsons in the armed forces. one grandson was listed in action at Wake Island December 8 1941.

Bloomington family announces the marriage of Dora Thompson to Sergeant Howard Mecham of St. Charles in the Salt Lake LDS temple on December 23. Mecham has served in the east central states discharge and is stationed at Dugway proving grounds. Dora’s mother accompanied the couple home on Christmas Eve. Dora’s twin brother Dean, now Corporal Technician, remains in New Guinea.
Retailers selling rationed foods must file their token applications by Saturday January 8 to ensure supply when OPA takes effect. Application forms are distributed by trade associations and available at local rationing boards.
The Literary Club hosted its annual party on December 30 at Mr. and Mrs. Wm Lauritzen's home. Twenty five guests enjoyed turkey dinner and elaborate red, green and white decorations. Several couples and special guests attended including Wm Jensen Weldon Grandy Sparks Athay Kendall Thompson and others with visitors from Salt Lake City and San Francisco.
The 1943 tax blanks were mailed to about 165 000 Idahoans who filed 1942 returns as part of the Current Tax Payment Act of 1943. The notices carry form 1125 showing total tax and payments to credit the taxpayer properly. Requirements for filing 1948 returns depend on filing status and gross income, with thresholds up to 1200 for married couples, and 624 for individuals, plus the new payment plan and forgiveness provisions. The Collector of Internal Revenue urges prompt filing and offers staff help to complete returns.
A dinner honored Mrs. Mary J Rich on her 84th birthday at the Dr. and Mrs. Reed Rich home in Montpelier. Guests included Dr. Spenter H Rich, Ralph Rich, D C Rich, Beth Weat of Paris, and Standley.
Game Department records show 2,112 deer and 204 elk killed in Idaho during 1943. Elk harvest fell from 785 in 1942, while Bear Lake County saw 20 deer and the Pocatello Preserve 85 elk killed by 100 hunters with permits. A very light winter reduced drift from Yellowstone and Wyoming.
Mrs. Rachel Mae Nelson Aland aged 70 died Friday evening at her Idaho Falls home after a yearlong heart illness. Born May 27, 1873 in Bloomington Idaho, she married Frank Aland in 1893. They lived in Driggs 35 years and Idaho Falls six years. Survived by husband and several children, siblings, and many relatives. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery after services in the Idaho Falls Fourth Ward chapel.
The Bear Lake Stake MIA sponsors the second of three dances on January 14, 1944, in Bloomington. Shepherd orchestra will provide music. Admission will be your budget ticket.

Litt Donald M Budge and Miss June Clayton wed in Salt Lake City on December 21. Mrs Budge is daughter of Mr and Mrs A Clayton of Paris and a nurse at Salt Lake hospital. Lt Budge, son of Mrs Arthur Budge, serves with the Army at Ft Sumner New Mexico. They plan to reside at Ft Sumner after spending Sunday in Paria with relatives.
Bear Lake records a deep freeze far milder than the Army Arctic room tests at Lawrence Mass. in the Quartermaster Corps facility. Soldiers endure hours at 40 to 60 degrees below zero with wired sensors recording eight body points to assess fabrics and gear for future civilian use.
The War Food Administration lifted rationing on pressure cookers and feed grinders and crushers for most uses. Purchases for non food preservation require approval from the Director, Office of Materials and Facilities, War Food Administration, Washington D C.
