M men basketball tournament held in Fielding High gym on February 13 14 and 16 includes Bear Idaho Big Wor Montpelier Woodruff Star Wars teams. Eliot Casperson director notes an elimination format with consolation bracket and finals. All Church tournament follows February 27 with junior event March 1 2 and 3.
Montpelier defeats Malad 56 to 55 in a frantic game featuring 131 free throws and 80 personal fouls. Montpelier earns a key win as district tournament schedules loom with upcoming home and away games against North Gem Soda Springs South Rich and Grace.

A statewide meeting in Boise is noted for January 24.
State Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee informs farmers of a 1956 wheat allotment for those who seeded no wheat for grain in the past three years. New-grower eligibility requires no wheat for five years and proper county ASC submission by February 15, 1956, at the Bear Lake ASC office.
Rhea Hulme of Paris earns Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow honors in statewide competition sponsored by General Mills. She scored highest on a 10 category homemaking exam and will vie for a $5,000 national prize with 71 state winners, receiving an $1,800 state scholarship and a Washington trip if selected.
The Lincoln Day Banquet for the election year will be held at the Hotel Bannock in Pocatello starting at 7 30 p m on February 9. Speaker will be John C Vivian former Colorado governor and noted Republican figure. Tickets available through Lincoln Day Association reps in eastern Idaho counties. Frank Sorgats of Montpelier handles Bear Lake county tickets.

The Fielding PTA refreshed the faculty room over the weekend replacing worn furniture with a green living room set a rug a mirror a lamp and a table Adjacent to the main office the room serves as a lounge and extra office space The PTA has funded multiple projects including stage cyclorama gym score board and lunch department equipment for the high school.
The Idaho Division of the American Cancer Society will hold regional training schools February 10-11 in Lewiston February 17-18 in Pocatello and February 24-25 in Boise. The program aims to boost volunteer education, with two nurses invited per county and a noon nurses’ session led by Miss Marjorie Schlotterbeck.

Mr and Mrs Grant Rich and Mr and Mrs Clifford Price visited Logan on Saturday to attend the USAC BTU game that evening and remain for the event.
Stauffer Chemical reports a major Bear Lake phosphate discovery with reserves over five million tons. A $400000 San Francisco Chemical development supports two acidulation plants and a Garfield plant west of Salt Lake City, but commercial operation plans remain undecided. Excavation includes 1400 foot cross cut and 3000 feet of drifting with a 1500 foot raise to surface. 20 men work two shifts, five days a week.
George Richard Pugmire aged 75 died Monday morning while working as a watch man at Meadow Brook Golf Course in Salt Lake City. Born June 16, 1880 in Laketown to Joseph Hyrum and Ellen Creighton Pugmire, he married Carrie Kilgore in Logan in 1903. Survived by widow, son Theodore of Salt Lake, two grandchildren, two great grandchildren, sister Mrs. Josephine P. Matthews of Tacoma, and half siblings Alice Ray James and Jesse Pugmire.

Osborne Low born in Ovid Idaho on April 1 1865 was the fourth child in a family of 18. He died in his sleep January 20 and funeral services were held January 24 in Afton Wyoming South Ward Chapel. He married Sylvia Merrill in 1887. she died in 1889 leaving a daughter Alice who lived seven months. He later married Mary Ann Kennington in 1898 in the Logan Temple.
Bear Lake Soil Conservation District, led by J. Rodney Ream, enters the national Soil Conservation Awards program by Goodyear. Districts compete statewide for non partisan judging with points for district duties. Goodyear prizes include a December 1956 Wig Wam Ranch trip for each winning district official and cooperating farmer.

Mr and Mrs Alfred Howell of Fish Haven return home this week after serving as missionaries for the LDS Church with headquarters at Winnsboro Louisiana They say they enjoyed the work and made many new friends through teaching and associations.

J B Traeger announces indefinite closure of Conda underground mine due to high costs. About 30 miners in the underground section and 15 other workers, total 45, may transfer to other departments or to Butte Montana. Strip mining and mill operations continue. duration of the shutdown unknown. The Conda mine opened in 1920 and about 90 people are employed overall with many residents of Conda, Soda Springs, and Georgetown.
Officials of the Star Valley Creamery Co announced that they completed dividing the year 1955 earnings of $27,000. A cash bonus of 2c per pound was mailed to the 343 local cooperative patrons, with individual checks up to $173. A Certificate of Equity of the same amount will be paid in five years.
F G Lewis of Dingle Idaho buys the Guernsey sire Pre Lolas Noble Jim from H H Isaac Hill of North Ogden Utah, as reported by the American Guernsey Cattle Club. The bull traces to Lon don Pre Lola, a cow once classified desirable for type.
Dennis James Crossley earned an outstanding recognition at the LDS Business College weekly assembly for a perfect grammar test score. He is a Fielding High School graduate and the son of Mr and Mrs Riley Y Crossley of St Charles. Mr and Mrs Archie Shepherd departed Monday for a California relatives visit.

Elva T Thornock Patterson 70 of Bloomington died Monday January 30 at the home of her daughter and son in law Claude and Dela Bingham in Burley Idaho after a short illness. She was born September 16 1885 in Bloomington and married Joseph P Patterson April 12 1905. Surviving are ten children 28 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren with many siblings. Funeral services will be held at the Bloomington Ward Chapel at 2 pm Friday with calling hours at the Bingham home Thursday and Friday until service time.
Samples from farms will be tested by the University of Idaho under a new system. County agents collect and prepare soils before sending to Moscow for analysis by the agricultural chemistry department. Northern Idaho tests cover pH phosphoric acid potassium sulfur total nitrogen with a separate sulfur option. southern tests cover pH phosphoric acid potassium and total salts with separate nitrogen and potassium tests. About 2000 samples yearly, potentially 4000 under the new plan.
