The Bear Lake Stake holds a priesthood conference opening Saturday evening at 7 50 with stake leaders, bishops, quorums, and ward committees urged to attend. Sunday sessions begin at 10 00 a m for Melchizedek Priesthood holders and 2 00 p m for Aaronic Priesthood members with public attendance invited.
LoVon Esterholdt, 38, is in Bear Lake County Hospital Montpelier with a fractured skull from a fist fight after a basketball game between Bloomington and Pegram Saturday night. His condition is listed as critical.
Rae Straw of Montpelier presented her pupils in a dance recital on Wednesday. Participants included Peggy Hill, Mariane Hill, Cleone Rigby, Tone Rigby, Joyce Cochrane, Jeane Surbach, Ann Marie Smedley, Marilyn Gee, Fred Adams, Irene Kelsey, Nondal Poulsen, Donna Bridges, Lois Hoff, Marian Wells, Betty Jo Kunz, Meria Nelson, Janice Grandy, Marilyn Rich, Beverly Beyer, Mary Kay Sorgatz, Ione Pugmire, Norma Lucherini, Erna Glauser, Ruth Oliver, Barbara Perkins, Gate Aland, and Erma Hirsch. National figures Chadwick Woodring and Lodge spoke at the Mayflower Hotel on defense policy. They urged cautious reform, defense buildup, and restrained intervention while addressing domestic political questions and congressional committees.
The Wool Growers association of 85 permittees in the Cache National forest will hold a meeting in the Federal building Pocatello Idaho at 2 p m Friday February 3 1939. They graze 49509 sheep and are cooperating with the forest service on range management and reseeding to restore productivity.
More than 4 000 acres in at least 17 Idaho counties will plant flaxseed this spring marking a new agricultural development for 1939. Eastern Oregon will grow over 6 000 acres experimentally. Joe W Jarvis and S A Jackson lead the Idaho Oregon flax movement backed by cooperative agents and the Union Pacific committee. Flax yields about one bushel per acre, with prices three to four times wheat, and matures in 90 to 120 days ready for sale in Portland Utah Oregon.
The Book Review club meets Thursday evening February 9 at 7 30 p m in the Seminary building. Mrs Clarence Merritt will review Louis Pasteur The Night of The Laboratory by Francis E Benz.
The Post reports new library hours from 2:00 to 3:00 PM and 4:00 to 6:00 PM daily except Sunday. The library is located in the courthouse.
The wool committee met at First Security Bank to revise the 1939 wool contract. Contracts go to wool growers by January 30 with March 1 as the final acceptance date. Emphasis on clean, dry wool and proper packing to maintain inspection standards. Also listed are hatcherymen part of the National Poultry Improvement Plan coordinated by University of Idaho extension and the USDA with Pen Moore supervising.
Logan Fourth ward M Men edged Paris Second ward 141 to 34 in a close game. Paris led 23 20 at halftime before Logan rallied behind Hinton and Bishop to pull away in the final quarter. Paris standouts Walter Jaussi and Lyman Sparks scored 12 and 15. Logan’s Hinton 18 and Bishop 12 led scoring. Paris previously beat Fish Haven 63 to 21 last Thursday.
County agent offers price list for forest trees including Siberian elm silver maple and possibly green ash adaptable to Bear Lake county. Trees must be lined out in nursery rows for about a year. Minimum order is 100 trees total or 56 per species due to packing and handling costs.
Mrs. Emma Brimhall died after a several week illness at Soda Springs hospital 2 a m Monday. She was mother of nine with husband William and children Max Preston Don Keith Dale. Funeral services were held in Paris First ward chapel with Bishop H N Austin presiding. Remains were taken to Provo Utah for burial.
Fielding Spartans traveled to Pocatello and Blackfoot and failed to win. Pocatello won 49 to 33 with Averal Pugmire scoring 18. Blackfoot defeated Fielding 49 to 16 as the team struggled from the perimeter. Don Lewis led Fielding with 19 points. Next, Randolph Utah visits Paris on February 4.
Fenton Allred of Paris was badly hurt last week at his home when a pitchfork’s tines pierced his chest as he jumped from a ladder in the barn. The fork stood point up and entered the chest, exiting near the back of the neck. He is reported to be getting along nicely.
The heaviest snow of the winter blanketed Bear Lake County with up to six inches. The blizzard was followed by sub-zero temperatures with 14 degrees below zero recorded Wednesday night, marking the coldest of the season. All main highways have been opened for travel.

Five Bear Lake stake members joined 3109 attendees from 95 stakes and eight missions for BYU Leadership Week January 23. Theme Life at its Best highlighted lectures by Dr. Richard R. Lyman Stephen L Richards and Elder George Albert Guttth of the Council of Twelve Seas. Attendees included Reuben Clark and Be Bennion, with 250 meetings across 45 visitors. Emergency crop and feed loan applications for 1939 are being received at the county agent's office in Paris Idaho. Loans target farmers with urgent cash needs who cannot obtain credit elsewhere and use a first lien on financed crops or livestock as security. Checks are mailed from the Spokane Washington regional office.
