Joseph C Rich, a Deseret News columnist, boosted spirits in Bear Lake's 1860s colony with jokes and pranks. He wrote on eggs with invisible ink then revealed messages to crowds, prompting belief in messages from another world until his father halted the stunt.
The Northern District Wool Growers Auxiliary held its annual summer outing at Monte Cristo the home of Mr and Mrs Nick Chournas. Husbands and Chef Girard of Salt Lake City attended with his wife Lamb and western songs were performed by George Chournas and others. The group sponsors the Make It Yourself With Wool contest for girls ages 13 to 22 to sew wool material and learn its qualities. Northwestern district officers include President Mrs Keith Johnson Lake Town First Vice President Mrs Bill Peterson Hyrum Second Vice President Mrs Clifford Thorson Hear River City Secretary Mrs Eliza Willis Laketown Treasurer Mrs Russell Satterthwaite Garden City.
Misa Gwen Collings, a Rexburg area student from Ricks College Rex org, has accepted an elementary teaching position at Shelley Idaho for the 1057 58 school year. She plans to return to Rick College for further study after the year. Miss Collings is daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Collings of Paris. She recently spent a week at the parental home and left last Friday for Shelley.
The 1957-1958 teacher roster for School District No. 33 is nearly complete with only two Geneva positions open. Superintendent A J Winters notes nationwide teaching shortages and aims to fill vacancies before September 9. The first district faculty meeting is September 7 at Montpelier High School.
Army Pvt. William E. Bird son of Mr and Mrs Thamel Bird of Paris completed eight weeks of basic combat training on August 23 at Fort Lewis Washington He is a 1956 graduate of Fielding High School.
The Paris Public Library has received 154 state books available until November 26. The collection includes titles for teenagers and other readers. Borrowing time is two weeks with fines for overdue books, and Mrs Vallentine asks parents to help return all items promptly.
Members meeting in Paris at the county courthouse endorsed the National Livestock and Meat Board as an advisory body to the Secretary of Agriculture. They discussed Grade A dairy sanitary laws, testing milk by butter fat versus solids, withdrawal of grazing permits in national forests, and wheat acreage control tied to bushels sold.
The St Charles choir sponsored event last Sunday drew over 200 attendees from St Charles ward and nearby areas. Sister Ruby Bolton played organ, Niel Wilhelmsen led as chorister, and Bruce Wilhelmsen with Patricia Pug mire sang several duets. The evening was long remembered by music lovers.
Three young Paris residents spent time at Bear Lake Memorial Hospital in Montpelier last week and have since returned home almost fully recovered. Kirk Gansen spent one day there, Martin Ward one day, and Kevin Grimmett five days before returning home.
The Bear Lake County school board lists attendance units for 1957 58 based on a spring survey. It covers Fish Haven St Charles Bloomington Emerson Paris Ovid Bern Georgetown Bennington Lincoln Central Montpelier Dingle Geneva Raymond Montpelier High Fielding High and includes pupil counts and teacher totals. First graders for the year total 146 with distribution across the districts and age eligibility rules from the State Department of Education.
Pre Kent G. Michel son of Mr and Mrs W J Michel of Paris supports the national rifle and pistol matches at Camp Perry Ohio. After the event he will return to Fort Knox Kentucky where he is regularly assigned. Michel graduated from Fielding High School in 1956 and entered the U S Army in August 1956.
Bear Lake County Fair events kick off Friday August 30 with a Montpelier Lions Club breakfast and a noon parade. Saturday features free pulling matches with $300 in prizes at 1 pm and a world championship rodeo at 2:30 pm plus a circus midway act by Capell Broa and performers from El Centro California. Don Harrington will announce.
Idaho Governor Robert Smylie proclaims September 1 to 7 as Make It Yourself With Wool Week. He notes wool’s vital role in the economy and urges public participation to learn sewing and wool use, highlighting grower-supported efforts and national and state programs.
The Soil Bank 1958 Acreage Reserve program opens August 26 with signup at the County ASC office. True D Morse announces changes including a per farm Soil Bank Base to limit harvested crop acres. The new provision aims to curb shifts to other crops and reduce surpluses.
Floyd Lewis, long time Paris postoffice clerk, has terminated service and joined the Forest Service, stationed in Paris. Mrs Grant Rich, substitute clerk, also resigned and will hold a part time post at the Paris Forest Service office. Verna Bolton becomes assistant to Taft Budge, acting postmaster.
The Bear Lake Rangers held their annual breakfast and ride near Paris Peak last Saturday with about 25 participants including wives and Miss Marie Black the Bear Lake County Fair queen. Fifteen members rode 15 miles in clear weather, followed by a 5 PM chicken dinner and speeches by Ranger J. Vivian Nye. Rex Mattson, president, plans to resume next spring.
Plans advance for Canyon Village dedication on August 31 with Conrad Wirth of the National Park Service as lead speaker. John Q. Nichols of Yellowstone Park Co and L A. Garrison host. Mission 66 focus frames the eight million dollar project featuring a lodge, administration building, store, service station, dormitories and 500 motel units.
Ruth Ann Pugmire, daughter of Arlin R. Pugmire, and William Thomas Marshall, son of Thomas and Mrs Marshall of Portland Oregon, wed August 24 at the Little Wedding Chapel Around the Corner Las Vegas Nevada. Bishop Joseph W Wendell officiated. Attendants included the bride’s parents and Mr and Mrs Doneal Hymas. They will reside in Anaheim California.
Residents are urged to bring a record of their farm’s crop history when they call at the County ASC office to assist with eligibility and program processing.
Fielding High in Paria opens September 9 at 9 a.m. with new principal Max Gollacher and a full first day schedule including assembly, introductions, and student re registration. Enrollment expected around 180, with fees totaling 18.25 plus optional insurance.
Miss Rhea Hulme daughter of Mr and Mrs Amos Hulme Paris Utah married Arlin Venoy Wallentine son of Mr and Mrs L C Wallentine Paris at the Salt Lake Temple on Friday August 23 A wedding breakfast followed at the bride’s sister and brother in law Latrel Pigmire home in Salt Lake City A reception for 300 guests was held Saturday night in the Paris Second Ward chapel with gifts and a program after the reception.
Mr and Mrs James R Hawkes and children returned last Thursday from a week long vacation in Kansas with C C Stauffer of Omaga The trip included their son Clayton Stauffer who had spent the summer with his grandparents Mr and Mrs Stauffer
Visitors at the home of Mrs. Alfred W. Shepherd in the past ten days came from distant places. Included were Mr. and Mrs. Karl Evans Jr of Sacramento California her son and family Dr and Mrs Douglas A Shepherd of Kalamazoo Michigan her daughter and son in law Mr and Mrs William Stell of Bountiful Utah and Mr Stell s parents Mr and Mrs Raymond Stell of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.
