Tuesday’s primary produced a light turnout with 803 Democrats and 796 Republicans. In the county level race for County Commissioner District 3, C N Chris Carlsen led Reed Hymas 79 to 27 in the Liberty precinct, nearly doubling his opponent.
Army Private 1st Class Jerry F. Watson 20 of Montpelier served near Quan Loi in 17th Infantry Division as an infantryman with the 1st Infantry. His parents Mr and Mrs John O Watson and wife Lynette are noted as living in Montpelier.
Senior Master Sergeant Darwin L. Sorenson, son of Mr and Mrs Leon Sorenson of Georgetown, received the Air Force Commendation Medal at Wethersfield RAF Station England for meritorious service as an administrative superintendent at Ramstein Air Base Germany. He is now with a U S Air Force in Europe unit at Wethersfield.
Lyman Collings 70 of Mesa Arizona died of natural causes August 4 in a Salt Lake City rest home. Born March 24 1898 in Paris to Mahonri M and Annie Horsley Collings he married Olive DeRenzy October 16 1920 in Pocatello with the Mesa LDS Temple ceremony. Funeral services were held at Spencer LDS Ward Chapel Salt Lake City and burial occurred in Paris Cemetery.
Over two weeks Bear Lake County deputies investigated four traffic mishaps. James Shultis of Bennington rammed a parked car at North Beach State Park sidelining Oscar Hunsaker’s vehicle with $400 total damage. Mrs. Melton sustained severe back injuries after a rollover near Montpelier. she was hospitalized in Salt Lake City after initial treatment at Bear Lake Memorial. Charles S. Vick, 16, Rochester N.Y., totaled a Boyd Woolsten pickup last Monday evening.
County Attorney Gary Williams and Justice Clem Humpherys dropped counts of disturbing the peace and contributing to delinquency of a minor for Paul Grandy after he enlisted in the armed forces. Max Pugmire’s charges were dropped with similar terms. Roger Jacobson faces several counts and awaits a hearing with no date set.
Airman 1st Class Jerry L. McCalmon of Montpelier is stationed with the 4258th Strategic Wing at U Tapao Air Field in Thailand. He serves as a Strategic Air Command administrative specialist supporting B 52 Stratfortress operations and KC 135 Stratotankers during the air war over Vietnam, after a prior posting at Glasgow AFB Montana.
Hulme lost control on Border-Pegram road and rolled a vehicle. Passenger Stephen Grunig of Montpelier injured and treated at Bear Lake Hospital. Vick cited for failure to be reasonable and prudent. Location three miles south of Border, near U.S. 30N. Ronald Day of Pocatello failed to stop at Highway 89 Idaho 36 intersection in Ovid, striking a trailer pulled by William Tobias of Ogden Utah. Trailer damage $800, car damage $400. Both had three passengers. no injuries.
Fair begins fifteen with entries for baking canning arts crafts needlework and education exhibits due by 11 00 a m judging starts immediately after. Livestock entries open at 1 00 p m and close at 6 00 p m. A complete events list is in the Fair Premium List distributed county wide.
The Montpelier Chamber of Commerce sponsors a parade at noon on August 16 and 6 PM on August 17. Co chairs Howard Tolley and Jay Ashiton invite participation. Prizes total 145 dollars across categories including Business Church clubs Scouts and novelty classes. Parade forms 11 AM Friday and 5 PM Saturday on North 5th, Montpelier, route unchanged.
Uintah County extension agent Nyle J. Matthews departs with his wife Karen and three daughters for a two year assignment in La Paz Bolivia. He will serve as livestock specialist for the U S Agency for International Development, replacing his brother Darrell.
