Ezra J. Poulson argues for expanding Bear Lake dairy farming with modern, mechanized methods and better feeds. He cites corn and alfalfa as key, notes Denmark as a model, and urges youth involvement and succession planning to sustain local dairies and the Paris area cheese industry.
The forty ninth Rich family reunion at St Charles drew about 250 descendants of Charles C Rich. Dr Wendell C Rich discussed genealogy tracing to English Earls of Warwick and presented all attendees with forebear charts. Prof Owen Rich aired a Charles E Rich life recording and Ezra J Poulsen published Rich life story.
Mrs. W. E. Armstrong of Queensland told Idaho Farm Bureau Federation women in Montpelier that global idea exchanges among women promote peace. She travels across 34 states April through September to observe American home life and share Australian society via color slides. Armstrong noted the Queensland Countrywomen's Association supports projects since 1922 with assets over 150 million dollars and extensive welfare facilities.
The Bear Lake county nominating primary and general election polling sites are listed for Tuesday. Precinct boundaries remain as in 1956. Locations include Bennington School House Montpelier City Hall High School Lodge Hall Lincoln School Wardboro D S G Church Dingle School House and others.
The Bear Lake County Talent Find final will be Friday August 15 at the Paris Second Ward Church starting at 8 o clock. Winners from Farm Bureau county contests advance to the district contest and the public is invited.
W. S. Lauritzen, former Paris resident now in Montpelier, celebrated 25 years since his first Bear Lake Valley bus run from Pocatello. He reports no major highway accidents in 25 years and surveys about 2,000,000 miles driven. He notes many former baby riders are now parents bringing their children aboard.
The Grimmett Hardware store in Paris reported four rifles missing from the gun rack. Sheriff O. E. Monson and Deputy George Ramey investigated after Monday’s inventory showed the guns gone by Tuesday morning. No break-in was found and police suspect theft during store activity.
Bear Lake County Commissioners signed a contract with Idaho to build the Lanark road linking Highway 89 north of Paris to Liberty near Emigration Canyon. Bids are expected between August 15 and 30. The county covers 40 percent of about 38 000 dollars, with the Public Road Fund supplying the rest. Two contracts will be issued for 4.092 miles and 0.758 miles.
The Paris First Ward Primary marked its 80th anniversary with a Sunday evening program titled Teach Me to Walk in the Light. Mrs. Catherine Rich of the Primary general board spoke in Salt Lake, crafts from the classes were shown, and a Tuesday morning parade featured about 300 children in costume led by the primary colors and a rhythm band with decorated tricycles bicycles and wagons.
Lt. L. K. Passey, now at McConnell Air Force Base Kansas, is undergoing training as an aircraft commander on the B 47. He and his wife plan a September visit to Bear Lake friends and relatives after training ends.
Interest grows as Bear Lake county voters inch toward the primary next Tuesday. Governor Smylie and U S representatives draw attention with four Democratic candidates each. The slate lists Eldon W. Cook and Orson H. Grimmett for county offices with Juanita W. Smart and others running as deputies. Prosecuting Attorney Elbert E. Gass leads the Montpelier ticket alongside E Woodruff Stucks. Coroner Nile Matthews and Justices of the Peace for Paris and Montpelier are also named.
Miss Mary Armatage, who has served the Lowe Drug store in addition to completing a high school course at Righting High School, will leave the community this week for Pocatello. She will reside with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Armatage and enroll at Idaho State College to major in business education.
A farewell testimonial for Elder DeVon Hirschi of St Charles will be held Sunday at 8 p.m. in the St Charles ward chapel. He has been called to serve a mission in the British Isles and will depart next week for the mission home in Salt Lake City to prepare for his duties.
The Bear Lake Rangers ninety one riders strong, led by Ranger Queen Bonnie Shirley and Attendant Judy Parker, rode from Paris to Preston for the rodeo parade and grand entry. They stayed at Deer Cliff Inn 23 miles from Paris, with 45 attending a banquet.
Bear Lake County schools will start on the first Monday after Labor Day, September 8, with the closing date May 22, 1959. First grade entrants must have turned six by October 1. The rule follows Idaho State Department guidance approved by the attorney general. birth certificates may be required if birth dates are in question.
Herbert Nebeker a Laketown pioneer who lived in Salt Lake City for years died Friday August 1 at his Salt Lake home. He and his father John Nebeker were in the sheep business before selling land to the Willis brothers and moving ranch operations to Seton Utah. Services for Nebeker were held in Salt Lake City on August 2 with family and friends in attendance.
Registration closes August 9 at 9 p m for Bear Lake county voters. Those voting August 12 must meet citizenship and residence requirements and be registered. If staying in same precinct no re registration needed. moves require a transfer. Absentee ballots available until August 11. apply in person or by mail.
The Union Pacific announced an approximate 29 percent reduction in wheat freight rates for Idaho and Utah grain shipments to California and to Portland and Seattle, effective August 11, with a tentative August 28 date previously set. Farm Bureau urged faster implementation to prevent inequalities as harvest begins and early sales would miss the benefit.
New York tourists die in a two car crash on Highway 89 two miles west of Garden City. Three Salt Lake City residents were seriously injured when their car collided with the others. The two deceased were Edith Scolnick and her husband Robert Scolnick. The injured were Susan Wakley Evelyn Wakley and Julia Griffith. Ralph Wakley was uninjured. Investigators say a bee incident contributed to the loss of control.
The Idaho State Tax Commission reported a 1.7 percent rise in assessed valuation for 1958 totaling 468,858,823 dollars. Ada County led gains with 2,177,316 dollars, while Shoshone County recorded the largest loss at 1,755,254 dollars. Cattle numbers fell by 6,207, reducing valuation by about 35,000 dollars.
Bear Lake Valley youths participate with Utah State University and Cadhe Centennial commission's Young America Opportunity Theatre in Logan. The group includes 40 NYC dancers and rehearses Carousel and Peer Gynt with Rob ert Clegg from Grace credited as bridegroom father in Peer Gynt and policeman in Carousel. Ensemble members include Norene Crossley St Charles Mora Riley Crossley Linda Hart Bloomington and Marilyn Ward Bloomington.
Rich County Fair entries on August 22 and 28 will be accepted without health certificates due to designation as a modified brucellosis and tuberculosis area. Hog chlorination and bivi tongue issues have not affected ranchers, and a new class for best feeder steers with prizes for top finishes is added.
