Railroads Defeated in Land Forfeiture Case
Federal Judge Charles E. Wolverton ruled that Southern Pacific and Oregon & California must forfeit about 2.4 million acres valued between 40 and 75 million dollars. The land, granted to aid railway construction, must be sold to bona fide settlers in parcels not exceeding 160 acres and at no more than 2.50 per acre. The railroads lost every contention in the government case.
