C Watt Brandon age 86 former publisher of the Kemmerer Camera and Gazette and longtime Wyoming newspaper figure died. He led papers including the Pinedale Roundup Cokeville Register McMinnon News Sheridan Post and Sheridan Journal and was known as the dean of Wyoming newspaper publishers. Born October 12 1871 in Georgetown Illinois he moved to Wyoming in 1904.
The Fielding High School annual election chose Jerry Bolton as student body president for 1968 1969. Bolton previously led the Freshman class and served on the assembly committee, plus was student body president of the Seminary in his junior year. He also played basketball and football.
County Agricultural Agent Robert D. Kerns resigns to take an Area Extension Advisor role with the International Cooperation Administration based in Chitre Panama. He will report June 1 after a Washington orientation and will brief residents on the new post and Panama climate.
In Paris last Saturday J Vivian Nye and a crew with trucks road grader large brooms and shovels plus workers and local high school boys swept gravel and debris from Main Street. Businesses and residents joined in tidying walks and yards with plans for more cleanups next Saturdays. Spring has arrived.
State Fish and Game Department reports fishing license fees remain the same this year. Idaho residency rules guide license eligibility, with six months physical residence required for residents. under 14 may fish without a license. North Idaho lakes open May 1 for trout with Priest Lake and Pend Oreille drawing big crowds for kamloops and mackinaw trolling.
Bear Lake county commissioners appointed Elbert E. Gass of Boise as prosecuting attorney. Gass, assistant attorney general under Graydon W. Smith, has served since 1955 on the attorney general’s staff and will relocate to Montpelier. He has represented the Education Department, Law Enforcement, Commerce and Development, Insurance, Finance, Tax Commission, and Tax Collector.
Governor Smylie told Congressman Budge that Idaho highway officials and Wyoming authorities will support making U S 30N from Granger Wyoming to McGammon Idaho part of the interstate system. He said Idaho sought inclusion in the original 41000 miles and backs Budge’s bill as a good first step.
Savings bonds sales remained strong in Idaho with March E and H bond sales totaling 702 472 dollars. First quarter sales reached 2 468 468 dollars, about 30 4 percent of the 8 1 million dollar 1958 target, compared with 2 178 321 dollars in first quarter 1957. Bear Lake county March sales were 5 048 dollars.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints dedicates the New Zealand Temple near Hamilton, a $1 million project, and the Church College of New Zealand at $7 million. David O. McKay flies to dedicate the temple on April 20, with the college to be dedicated April 24. The self-sufficient campus features a 157 foot temple, a vast student center, and a 1500 acre farm. most labor and materials were donated by church members and suppliers. Up to 400 workers served as two year “Tabor missionaries,” with supervision by American craftsmen.
Fielding High School star Glenn Passey won the Class B discus with 138 ft 7 in as 4,000 fans witnessed a day of records at the BYU Invitational. Ronald Morris set a Utah pole vault milestone at 15 ft 1 in, the highest in Beehive state history, while Bud Spicer from Douglas, Wyoming broke the all around event total. About 900 girls from 16 Intermountain high schools performed in their Pep Clubs on Review exhibition.
The Paris Second Ward Blazers hosted a Monday night party on April 21 with their mothers as special guests. They highlighted annual accomplishments, discussed the salute code and four trails, played games, and enjoyed refreshments with families including Webb Bunn Parker Vallentine Bird and others.
Camp Elizabeth Passey of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers will hold a monthly meeting at 2 o clock on Thursday April 24 at the home of Mrs. Sybil Allred in Paris. All members are urged to attend.
Sam Wilkes, a well known St Charles businessman, suffered a heart attack Sunday evening while en route to Montpelier. He was taken to Bear Lake Memorial hospital in Montpelier where his condition remained serious.
The Fielding High School Junior class held its 1958 prom in the Pavilion with the theme Sayonara. About 150 juniors, parents, and faculty attended as a Coalville orchestra provided music. The prom committee included Karen Beck Norene Crossley Diane Findlay Bonnie Gleed Mardenne Michel Margean Nelson and Cathy Wyler. Officers were Robert Stock president Paul Cox vice president Vernon Parker secretary treasurer and Cheryl Hansen and Rich Ward historians.
Fielding High School students stage two one act plays and a skit in the auditorium next Wednesday April 20 at 8 p.m. The Singapore Spider features Terrance Mattson as Jason Marridew and centers on a plot to rob the old seaman. Nobody Sleeps is a comedy with Roger Arnell as Spike the burglar. The Cedar Bark Gangs follows Bear Lake Valley teens seeking respect by smoking cigars with Flora Roberts as Skinny Stucks and Dan Rich as Mr. Shepherd. A matinee will be held for Emerson elementary students. Prejudice appears as a closing note.
The Paris Lions Club held their monthly Ladies Night at Emerson school cafeteria with a baked ham dinner by Mrs. Ray Lewis. Visitors included Arthur Kelly and Harvey Childs from Soda Springs. Kelly, candidate for Lions District 39 E governor, spoke on his bid and upcoming activities before the Sun Valley state convention. Nominees announced for the coming year include Von Tippets for president James Hawkes for vice president and C. O. Broxon for secretary.
Fielding Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America elected officers for the next year. New officers include Renee Peterson president Eleanor Reich vice president Myrle Gleed secretary Bonnie Sorenson treasurer Brenda Eborn historian Thelma Tippets reporter Maril Ward parliamentarian Ann Miler depress chairman Karen Hymas projects chairman Karen Summers recreation chairman. Outgoing officers were Mosella Budge Myrna Armatage Faye Peterson Linda Hart Joyce Beck Linda Minson Marie Ward Rosann Kelsey Dixie Pugmire and Karen Rich.
The literary club met monthly at Sybil Allred’s home with Lake Bateman as hostess. Verna Jensen reviewed part two of "Consultation Room" by Dr. Frederick Loomis. Members included Amy Athay Ethel Jensen Beth West Theressa Rich Norma Roghaar Lark Bateman Sybil Allred Jean Grimmett. Guests were Beth Allred Barbara Hulme and Verna Jensen.
The American Farm Bureau launches a nationwide Good Citizenship program to raise member awareness and defend liberties. Idaho has 14 000 members with Bear Lake county reaching 600. Essays in four Farm Bureau groups must be 600 words or less on How I Helped Elect Fighters for Freedom with a gold watch prize and merit certificates.
Bear Lake Rangers held their first year meeting April 17 to discuss the annual Horse Show Rodeo and Fourth of July parade. The group voted to sponsor a traveling memorial trophy for Don Hunter of Soda Springs in cow cutting. The trophy stays with the Rangers for display and must be returned each year. Valley residents are urged to join by May 16. Grant Rich Terrall Palmer and Doc Broxon were elected honorary members.
The Paris Bridge Club met at Mrs. Orlean Innes home on Wednesday for a regular session. A delicious lunch preceded the games. High score was won by Mrs. Monson and a going away gift was given to Mrs. Lynn Kerns who is leaving the community. Guests included Inez Tunks Dorothy Watterson Audrey Monson Winnie Stephens and Mary Belli.
A pot luck dinner at the Glen Grimmett home honored Mr and Mrs Robert D Kerns prior to their departure. Guests included the Grimmetts the Kerns the Pugmires the Roghars and Mrs Mary Belli.
