Pen-like probe could help surgeons ensure cancer removal
Researchers at the University of Texas and collaborators report a hand‑held MasSpec Pen that uses mass spectrometry to distinguish cancerous from healthy tissue in real time. In lab tests on 253 tumors, the device was over 96 percent accurate and could produce a readout in under a minute. Human testing in surgeries planned next year begins with breast cancer, potentially reducing the need for repeat operations.
