Port Austin Reef Light shows cost of lighthouse preservation
Historic Port Austin Reef Light and other Great Lakes beacons illustrate the price of saving lighthouses. Volunteers, led by Lou Schillinger, spent decades and vast outlays, with the Port Austin project already near half a million dollars in time and materials and an expected 1.6 million more. Nearby Iconic lights like St Helena Island and North Point New Milwaukee add to the costly, ongoing effort driven by passion and grants.
