Oswego as a celestial city history and renamed streets
Maritime historian Richard Palmer traces Oswego’s 40 year era as a celestial starred town. The 1797 layout by Benjamin Wright used constellation names for east west streets, later changed by 1837 to Native American names like Bridge, Erie, Niagara. The north south names remained fixed. Orion and Lyra became Mercer and Van Buren. Oswego County formed in 1816 and efforts to split or move seats surfaced, with subsequent state actions and later moves affecting services in 1973.
