The U S Air Force recovered Discoverer XVII capsule for a second time, snaring it from a 250 by 50 mile "ball park" area northeast of Honolulu. Pilot Capt. Gene W Jones and the Pelican II crew captured the 125 pound reentry capsule after a long chase at 9 500 feet. A planned midnight strike by 900 Amalgamated Transport Union mechanics could halt all 1,432 MTA buses and streetcars across Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside and Orange counties, affecting about 750,000 daily riders. MTA offered 41 cents an hour, while current top wage is 2.61 pounds per hour. strike would be the region’s most serious. In 1958 MTA merged private operators, so disruption would stop multiple parallel routes.

The Commerce Department reports 25 states will gain or lose seats in the House based on the 1960 census with 16 states losing and nine gaining. California leads gains with eight, Florida four, and several states losing one to three seats. total seats drop from 437 to 435 for the 88th Congress. Admiral and wife among 10 dead in two Navy air crashes

Eyewitnesses say the building’s single exit and dawn blaze after a projection-room explosion caused massive casualties.
