Detroit unions propel 2.1 billion rustbelt neighborhood revival
A union backed effort expands from Detroit to eight rustbelt cities with 1.2 billion from the Housing Investment Trust and 900 million from partners to repair and renovate up to 300 homes and create about 25,000 jobs over five to seven years. Cities include St. Louis Minneapolis Cleveland and Pittsburgh. The program targets aging neighborhoods, reduces vacancies, and leverages nonprofit groups to sell rehabilitated homes to low income families. Detroit’s Southwest Housing Solutions will manage rehabs aided by land bank acquisitions and city grants.
