Assembly resolution honors World War I veteran Sparky Rector
World War I veteran Laurence Street, known as Sparky Rector, received an Assembly resolution from Assemblyman Will Barclay on May 14. Rector’s story, preserved by the Veterans History Project with Joe Messineo and cameraman Dick Caligiovanni, covers boot camp through Africa Sicily and the liberation of Dachau. The resolution was adopted in March. Sydney DeLapp advances to third round of Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., after passing written exam and spelling kookaburra. millennial proved a hurdle. She exits in the same round as last year with two years of eligibility remaining.

Man pleads guilty in Oswego manslaughter case
In Oswego County Court Markee Cathcart 20 pleaded guilty to second degree manslaughter for the October stabbing of Fulton resident Sean Leonard 23 at a Hannibal party. The deal calls for a three to nine year prison term. Witnesses said alcohol was involved and Cathcart claimed self defense.

Florida man pleads guilty to sex crimes in Oswego County
Shad D. Goldthwait, 35, of Palm Bay, Florida, pleaded guilty to two counts of first degree course of sexual conduct against a child for crimes involving two girls in Granby Hannibal and Fulton between 2002 and 2009. He faces 15 to 22 years in prison under the plea deal. He was arrested in Syracuse in August after a two month investigation by state police.
