SUNY Oswego professor to receive mentoring award
SUNY Oswego chemistry associate professor Dr. Fehmi Damkaci will be honored with the 2015 Provost's Award for Mentoring in Scholarly and Creative Activity. Nominators include five former students and about 30 research mentees who advanced to top graduate programs or jobs in chemistry. Damkaci, who joined Oswego in 2006 after a postdoctoral stint at Boston College, leads students in rigorous lab work such as total synthesis projects and coauthored papers in Journal of Chemical Education. He is noted for fostering critical thinking, deadlines, organization, and teamwork while maintaining a supportive mentor role. He also founded the GENIUS Olympiad and serves as Syracuse Academy of Science board president, holding a 2007 patent on nano-gold biosensors. The award will be presented this fall at a Scholarly and Creative Activity Committee ceremony.
