Mary Ann Lyndon and the Oswego Gale on Lake Ontario

Maritime historian Richard Palmer recalls J. J. O'Connor of Port Arthur and the Mary Ann Lyndon built in 1874 at Port Burwell. The white oak packet traded to Toronto, famed for its jib topsail, endures a violent August squall off Lake Ontario, driving the ship to Oswego and then battling to steer through a fierce gale toward Oswego piers. The memory closes with anticipation of a rash Lake Erie tempest.
