Oswego County eyes state takeover of indigent defense costs
Oswego County Finance and Personnel Committee approves separating Public Defender Department from County Attorney office at no county cost in anticipation of state takeover. Officials say fully funded defense by 2023 could save at least 1.5 million over seven years and ease unfunded mandates. Supporters cite Gov Cuomo bills, Assemblyman Barclay and Senator Ritchie backing, calling the move a victory for taxpayers.
