New York heiress Gamble Benedict, 18, has been missing since December 27. Police conduct a quiet inquiry after a January 1 disclosure by her grandmother Katherine Geddes Benedict. Derby youth killed in Route 5 crash near Buffalo

Fire Destroys Montana Home. Six Children Die

A predawn blaze at a northwestern Montana ranch home killed six children aged 2 to 12 while the mother and infant twins were injured. The two-story house belonged to Lionel and Mrs. Scott. Firefighters arrived but the building was largely engulfed. The father escaped unharmed. The Scotts, renting the property, had 12 children.

Seaway Reports 20 Million Tons Through New Season

Seaway traffic last year reached 20,103,767 tons from April 25 to Dec 3 in its first full season. United States and Canada jointly run the waterway with Castle of the Seaway Development Corp forecasting 30 million tons annually by 1968. Officer Slays Assailant at Bowery Mission

Police say Sgt. Edward Johnson, 35, was killed after confronting an unidentified man who felled him with a butcher knife in a Bowery mission cellar crowded with derelicts. Johnson fired back, killing his attacker. both deaths occurred within seconds amid freezing conditions.
