SAN FRANCISCO UPI Chessman, once condemned to die for abduction and sex crimes, won an eighth reprieve from San Quentin’s gas chamber after a U.S. State Department appeal. Gov. Edmund G. Brown ordered a 60-day stay just before a scheduled execution, citing a telegram warning of hostile anti U.S. demonstrations during President Eisenhower’s South American visit.
