China ready for Vatican talks but Catholics urged to be patriots
Beijing signals openness to dialogue with the Vatican while demanding Catholics uphold patriotism and adapt Catholicism to Chinese society. Wang Zuo an, head of religious affairs, said the Vatican could have flexible actions to improve relations, but bishop appointments remain a point of contention with the state controlled Patriotic Association. The Vatican seeks progress after a 1951 split and recent tensions over bishop ordinations, with both sides hopeful yet cautious about future talks.
