Construction halt at St Nicholas Greek Orthodox shrine
Construction on the St Nicholas National Shrine near the World Trade Center has been temporarily suspended due to rising costs and questions over donations. Skanska said payment deadlines were extended and alternatives discussed as a funding deficit grew from an estimated 50 million to 72-78 million dollars. The archdiocese remains hopeful for a restart, with investigations by PricewaterhouseCoopers and Baker Hostetler underway.
