Rioting in Algiers leaves at least 90 dead and hundreds injured as Moslems bury their dead. French troops guard the Casbah while Charles de Gaulle ends his Algeria visit amid continuing unrest. Officials cite many Moslem deaths from non rifle wounds.
Antoine Gizenga, former deputy premier to Patrice Lumumba, proclaims himself Congo’s sole legitimate ruler. He designates Stanleyville as capital and reports taken over Lumumba’s post after his arrest, transferring the capital from Leopoldville to Stanleyville in a cable toUN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold.
President elect Kennedy meets with AFL-CIO head George Meany at his Georgetown home seeking guidance on his Cabinet. Rumors place Robert S. McNamara as potential secretary of defense with discussions also touching labor and agriculture posts.
Five youngsters from Knights of Pythias Home were found shivering in a briar patch near Clayton after an all night search involving about 1 500 volunteers and helicopters. The children, barefoot and red from the freezing temperatures, were taken to a Raleigh hospital in good condition. One child alleged mistreatment by a matron, which the home’s wife superintendent denied.
In Boone County near Danville a small frame home was destroyed by fire killing Billy Ray Hager five Patricia three and Nannie Arlene two. Their mother Mrs James Hager escaped with a two month old infant while the father James Hager thirty four suffered burns trying to rescue them. The couple's seven year old son also escaped. The mother was in shock after the blaze.
In New Orleans a cold wave kept protesters at bay as William Frantz School welcomed nine students under guard. Federal marshals escorted the nine toward the building while officers monitored corners and reporters endured the wind. A few spectators watched across from McDonogh No. 19 where two Negro girls faced first grade. a jeer from a bystander prompted a marshal to reply. Despite the Supreme Court ruling against state barriers, the school integration dispute persists as the Orleans Parish School Board faces possible removal by the State Legislature in Baton Rouge for accepting federal court orders.
Guinea and Morocco announce troop withdrawals from the United Nations Congo mission, cutting manpower by over five thousand and shrinking the force from nearly 20 000 to under 17 000. The move follows earlier pulls by the United Arab Republic and Indonesia, amid Security Council debates on a Congo peace plan.
