War of 1812 memories from Oswego on Fort Ontario fall of 1814
Oswego residents faced fear and duty during the War of 1812 as British forces captured Fort Ontario on May 6, 1814. A former Oswego resident recalls harsh conditions, evacuations, and local defense measures, including anti-British sentiment and frontier measures. The narrative covers troop movements, Governor’s actions, and personal letters detailing defense prospects, the 1813–14 siege, and later incidents linking Oswego to broader wartime events.
