GOP senator proposes NRA backed bill on guns and mental health
Senate Republican John Cornyn unveils a National Rifle Association backed bill to improve federal background checks and fund mental health programs. The measure, praised by police and mental health groups, faces opposition from gun control advocates who warn it could ease access to firearms for some unstable individuals. The bill links state record sharing to grant incentives and allows outpatient treatment orders, aiming to prevent violence while sparking debate over existing protections in cases like the Lafayette shooting.

Obama Says Iran Deal Critics Sell a Fantasy
President Obama challenged critics of the Iran nuclear accord as selling a fantasy and warned that blocking the deal would undermine U S credibility and risk war in the Middle East He labeled Netanyahu isolated but sincere in opposition and urged Congress to back the agreement while opponents flood Capitol Hill with ads and lobbying The White House argues diplomacy avoids war and preserves leverage while opponents say the deal leaves Iran with too much nuclear capability and funds to boost regional activity
