Artificial womb aids growth of extremely premature lambs
Researchers at CHOP create a fluid filled incubator with a mechanical placental system to mimic a womb. In animal tests five lambs aged like 23 week human preemies grew smoothly for three to four weeks, showing eye opening and breathing, while one older lamb remains healthy on a farm. Human trials may start in 3-5 years with FDA discussions ongoing.
