Perilous night on Lake Ontario salvaged by captain Haynes
Maritime historian Richard Palmer highlights the 1867 gale on Lake Ontario in which the schooner S. J. Holly, commanded by Captain Oscar Haynes, left the canal Friday night and battled seas to reach Oswego. Off Devil's Nose and So dus Point the vessel labored under frozen rigging and a frozen two reef foresail, finally entering Oswego harbor around 4 p.m. The crew praise Captain Haynes for cool, sagacious leadership amid the perilous voyage and credit his navigation with delivering the ship safely despite severe cargo damage and loss of their boat.
