Chancellor Powers announced the university will open September 20 with new dormitories and a chemistry building nearing completion. He said rooms are not all taken and homes will be found for interested students if dorms fill. The campus expects the largest attendance in history as Oxford prepares a special Eagle edition to greet arriving students.
The Oxford election to select a mayor and board of aldermen for a two year term begins tomorrow. Candidates for mayor include W. W. Elliott the incumbent Pp. B. Farr and Robert Farley. Aldermen candidates listed are C. G. Huggins B. B. Russell C. H. Roach Kirkwood Earl Fudge T. A. Dunn J. B. Brown and others.
Oxford plans a 30 000 feet per day planing mill ready soon on the Baggett Spur near the ice plant. C H Roach and Joe Smith buy a complete dressing lumber outfit now en route. The Owen Tie Co already secured half a year's work with an 18 hour day operation, while calls for additional industries ring through the town.
In Columbia on September 13 Cole Blease lost the race for the South Carolina gubernatorial nomination to Thomas McLeod by fifteen thousand votes, signaling the end of his comeback bid.
London reports Bulgaria prepares to join the eastern war against Greece following Turkish defeat. Aims to restore the old Bulgarian boundary at the southeastern corner of the Balkans as information arrives.
Richard Badley of Water Valley Mississippi was the top honors boy at the Boys Short Course in Junior Farm Mechanics held at Mississippi A M College. He earned 190 points, won a gold ribbon, and was chosen for the 1922 Club Boys Livestock Judging Team for Mississippi after a high livestock judging grade.
Mrs. W. W. Wilson entertained the Priscilla club Thursday afternoon. The event brought together society women for a light social visit and refreshments.
Detroit Michigan September 13 Senator Townsend has been renominated by the Republicans to seek another term. Early estimates place the expected victory margin between thirty thousand and fifty thousand votes.
Boston on September 13 reports Senator Lodge was renominated by the Republicans in yesterday's primary by a large margin likely nearing one hundred thousand votes as full counts come in.
The Simpson Boys Community Agricultural Club of Choctaw County reports August meeting attendance of about 20 boys and 8 girls. Visitors included the county agent and county superintendent of education. The group enjoyed ice cream, lemonade, and lunch, plus a baseball game.
The Home Demonstration Agent reports for the month ending August 31, 1922, visiting Toecopola Woodson Ridge Taylor Camp Ground Paris Live Oak Allus Indian Wound. Activities include 106 consultations 136 telephone calls 7 letters written 0% male travel 44 meetings 612 in attendance 32 home visits 27 demonstrations. County winners in butter canning and poultry judging named. The county represents at the State Short Course with five winners. Meat canning activity rising. concern over corn crop impact on winter meat supply.
Martin Cherry a seventeen year old from near Louisville Mississippi, poor and farm bound, pawns his shotgun to fund a trip to the Vacation Short Course in Junior Farm Mechanics at the A M College. The event, August 8 to 18, inspires him to pursue an education at A M College despite financial hurdles.
After a pleasant evening the B Y P U members enjoyed games and music from a Victrola. Miss Doyle Brummett entertained Friday night, and the hostess served delightful refreshments.
Louise Chapman became Mrs Roy Longmire at 3 30 on Tuesday at the Chapman residence in Longcreek Panola County. Rev Paul Watkins officiated as guests from Oxford Oxford Courtland and Strouds attended. The couple will visit Memphis New Orleans then reside in Utica with home invitations extended.
Ground broken for a two story red tile block on North street near First National Bank. Contractor Joe Smith expects quick completion. the 44 by 30 foot building will have two ground floor store rooms and 14 upper rooms. Property owner C. J. Lawhorn funded the project as a rental asset planned for ready occupancy.
Water Valley residents Dan and Mrs Dan McMinn visit sister Mrs Thomas Price in Oxford. Many locals journey to Memphis Grenada Tupelo and points nearby while others return home from trips including Philadelphia Baltimore Virginia Beach Flat Rock New Orleans and Baldwyn.
Rev Hulen Coffman of Greenville Texas holds a meeting at Tula this week and will begin a session at Independence Baptist Church next week. Coffman is a native of Mississippi and described as an able and efficient minister. Mr Will Singleterry reports his baby James Louis is very sick but improving.
Mrs Wilfred Goladay hosted a bridge afternoon with Miss Mary Elmore scoring the highest. Presentations included manicure set to Elmore and recipe books for brides Mrs Jno Falkner Mrs Webster and Mrs Goladay. Lottie Morgan organized a miscellaneous shower for Mrs Wilfred Galloday with about 30 guests and many gifts.
Prof W C Cearley and Miss Pau line Knight married at J L Caffee residence last Saturday. They depart for Memphis for a honeymoon then return to Cornish to reopen the local school where Cearley serves as principal.
