Street Fight At Postoffice Ends With Gunshot

A morning street altercation at the postoffice between W. P. Shinault and John Perkins led Shinault to fire a shot that missed Perkins and shattered a window. No injuries beyond Shinault’s bruises. Mayor Elliott escorted Shinault to his office. The dispute arose over a Beat 3 road and drainage district where Perkins resides.

County Agent Maintains Post as Health Unit Falls

Water Valley August 30 election chose the county agent to remain while the public health unit and the home demonstration work were defeated. The home demonstration line received 313 votes against retention, the county agent won by 86, and the health unit lost by 276 votes amid strong voter interest countywide.

County School Board Sets Final Meeting Before Schools Open

The County School Board will hold a final session on Monday September 5 to settle unfinished matters from this year before schools open the first Monday in October. Lafayette County Superintendent Coffeeville Gatewood listed among officials.

The County School Board sets Monday October 8 as the opening date for the 1921 22 public school term in Lafayette county. Compulsory attendance begins October 31. Teachers Examinations Scheduled in Lafayette County

Examinations for public school teachers will be held at the Lafayette County courthouse in Oxford on dates listed for white and colored teachers. White teachers take exams September 1 2 3 and September 15 16 17. negro teachers on September 8 9 10 and September 22 28 24. Any teacher without a valid license for the next session must take these tests as no special exams are offered this year. Primary licenses only recognized if teaching in the primary department of an accredited or affiliated school.

Manning Fined $100 Appeals in Whisky Case

Mack Menning, the transfer man, faced arraignment before the mayor and was fined $100 for violating the whisky law. He filed notice of appeal after officers obtained a search warrant and seized a quantity of whisky. The case will be tried in the Circuit Court this fall term.

Pine Valley Visitors Remember Miss Williamson’s Passing

Lillie Misses Drusilla and Jewell Johnson visit in the city with cousin Miss Ella Herron. Minnie Williamson, taken to Oxford for appendicitis surgery, died of heart failure about 24 hours later. She was 16 years old, daughter of Len Williamson of Pine Valley, and the community extends sympathy to the bereaved family.
