Kitty Gray, a newspaper writer, finds half of a broken coin and, urged by her editor, travels to Gretzhofen to uncover the inscription’s mystery. Shela accompanies her as they begin a series of adventures chasing the coin’s fading glory.
Kitty battles to recover the coin halves as Count Frederick and Count Sachie clash with intruders. Rolan fights to protect her while Kitty is confined in a secret room, finding a potential escape aided by a helpful token from outside. The king and Frederick maneuver over the missing coin, devising duplicitous plans to recover it.
Kitty confronts Count Sachie in a tense hallway exchange about loyalty and truth. She defends American standards while the Count presses for return and secrets, hinting at larger conspiracies and a looming decision. The scene ends with a threat to keep her in place until she complies.
