President Roosevelt rode down a village street in Yosemite Kaliforni a while crowds cheered. A boy shouted Hello Teddy and the President gently lectured the youngster on manners before continuing to the Bridal Veil camp. The party then moved toward Raymond for departure.
A violent race conflict erupts in northern Smith County near Burns. Reports say white farmers including Mr. Craft and several Black individuals were killed as whites scour the county whipping and shooting those suspected of ties to the Black community. The violence began after a debt dispute and escalated with ambush fire and retaliation.
Capt. Clough Overton of the Fifteenth Cavalry and Private Harry Noyes were killed May 15 at Sucatlan Mindanao when insurgent prisoners they guarded broke out, seized bolos and killed them. Private Wardlow was wounded. Lieut. Cameron pursued Flores’ followers after the breakout.
The Mississippi governor race remains months away with no firm county forecasts. Many voters stay silent and thoughtful, undecided among three candidates, while some counties show no clear preference as the campaign unfolds.

Judge A H Whitfield starts a new nine year term on the state supreme court after being appointed by Gov Longino to succeed himself. He will receive the increased salary of 4500 dollars after current terms expire, with no opposition and broad public support.
Real estate activity surges with city lots at a premium and suburban plots in demand. Marks & Co of Meridian reportedly paid 20000 for a Capitol street site for a department store, while another firm also closed a Capitol street purchase for the same purpose.

Mrs Helen D Bell reports a Richmond letter noting the Confederate Bazaar raised 20000 with Mississippi contributing 500. Funds go to the Jeff Davis monument fund for a June 3 1904 unveiling. Victoriano Loren zo an Indian chief and guerilla leader was executed by shooting in Panama on Friday after a death sentence handed down by a court martial. Gov. Muis and consular representatives had urged delaying the execution to await Bogotá's response, but Gen. Briceno refused. The event caused a deep impression locally.

Shelbyville Illinois on May 16 reports John Brereton of Hamilton Ohio swallowed almost two ounces of carbolic acid in the city Thursday and lay on the river bank awaiting death, a swift fatal outcome likely.
In Tuxpan on May 16 Colima volcano erupted violently last night with loud subterranean noises, lava flow and a heavy ash rain. The eruption persisted through the night.
New York on May 16 reports Mrs Kate Taylor died after a carbonated gas tank exploded in her soda water shop wrecking rear rooms of the store.
Seymour W. Tulloch former Washington city post office cashier publishes a full letter to Postmaster General Payne outlining irregularities in departmental expenditures. He cites vouchers improper payments and pressure from officials in 1899 including livingston cobb and beavers.
Deputy Constable Tom Vaughn is killed and Constable Dan Graham wounded when outlaw Smith opens fire during a not yet searched arrest. Smith escapes into darkness. authorities pursue. A later fragment notes a 1895 payroll intrigue involving Emma James and Fannie Winans and secrecy about salaries.
In Bridgeport on May 18 a clash between Connecticut Railway and Lighting Co strike breakers and crowds left at least fifty injured. Deputy sheriffs and Mayor Mulvihill faced stoning as cars ran to car barns. water hoses and firemen dispersed rioters. Sheriff threatens to supersede mayor to keep peace.
Special Deputy United States Marshal Hanley arrested James Duffy at Williamsville Perry county and brought him to Springfield for violation of the federal injunction. Duffy is alleged to have hidden between cars and fired on a passing train crew, the first such arrest under Judge Humphrey’s injunction.
Rome reports Father Patrelli a leading student of the Capranica college is named secretary of the apostolic delegation to Washington. He succeeds Mgr. Rooker who moves to be bishop of Jaro in the Philippines.
The pedestal for the Paris monument honoring Gen. Lafayette has been completed by American school children and will be shipped to France this month.
W B Winthrop executive secretary to Gov Taft of the Philippine commission arrives in San Francisco aboard the Siberia after two years in the Orient and takes a six months leave of absence.
A Moscow dispatch reports Count Tolstoi donated 7500 dollars to the relief fund aiding Jews in Kishineff. The Morning Post notes the contribution amid ongoing fundraising.
