Holmes county sheriff George S. Beall Jr may enter the race for state revenue agent. He has been urged from many parts of the state and will announce intentions soon. Locally he would receive enthusiastic support if he runs.
Dixie Endeavor Day on Sunday March 16 at 6 45 p m at the First Presbyterian Church. The event features Dixie Endeavor Tag Day and a meeting of special interest with a cheerful welcome.
Beginning March 17 I will be in the market for feeder hogs weighing 75 lbs and up. I will pay 10 to 14 cents per pound depending on quality and weight. Hogs paid for at the stock pen at Oxford. Phone 336. Oxford date March 13-20. J. D. Butler.
The September term convened last Monday with Judge Crum presiding marking the first Oxford session. District Attorney Rush Knox, crowds filled the square as grand jury and petit juries were sworn and cases heard with several continued to the next term.
The death of Mr Fudge occurred Monday after an operation at Bramlett's hospital. He was about 64, leaving a mother, wife, ten children with two sons in France, and many relatives. Rev. H. L. Johnson led funeral services at Yellow Leaf Cemetery where burial took place Tuesday.
At 2 PM today Leonard Burt, a black man chained for his life trial on wife murder, died after a jailbreak attempt during relocation from the county jail to the courthouse. Officers Whitehead and Metts pursued him as he dashed into an alley between the jail and nearby stores, Metts fired toward the ground to halt him, but Burt continued fleeing.
The ticket specifies Governor Lee M. Russell Chancery Clerk Glenn W Whitehead Treasurer G H Evans Tax Assessor J E Allen as listed candidates for the upcoming race.
Leonard Burt, captured at Greenwood after fleeing Oxford, was shot four times by Officer Metts during a pursuit behind the Miller hotel. He died at Bramlett’s hospital at 2 p.m. Thursday. Burt confessed to murdering his wife last September, saying jealousy sparked the crime. He, about 24, had lived two miles east of Oxford.
Mrs. George Lester and her daughter of Darling Mississippi will make Oxford their future home. Edwin Ross Butler of Monroe Louisiana spent a few days with his grandparents this week. Earl McElroy has arrived from overseas and is now at home. Mrs. Helen Dear plans to leave soon for Indianola.
