The Aesniae Panther Club receives a charter in Indiana with aims to improve marksmanship and protect timber and game while promoting natural history and hunting. Incorporators include EH HL Wm. July 14 reports from Topeka Emporia Lawrence and other cities urge shutting hydrants to preserve water pressure amid extreme heat. Dry ponds and water shortages threaten stock and power plants while corn and dairy sectors face stress. rainfall remains absent across the Southwest and fires loom. Distress extends into western Missouri and Indian Territory with little relief expected before fall. Temperature readings vary as security of water and drought conditions drive concerns.
Exposition guards blocked Purite and Breraco concessions at the Mileway Show. S Dundy and J St Marks were arrested by exposition police but released after no charges were filed. Cash advised closing but shows reopened and ticket sales resumed then guards returned to shut entrances.
A severe two hour rainfall caused extensive damage across the Chickasaw Nation region with collapsed houses and wrecked crops. The Southern Methodist church at the edge of the area was partly demolished, and streams flooded farmlands, while local relief efforts began. Meanwhile, Nebraska State Treasurer Joseph Partley, jailed for embezzlement, was released. The South Carolina Supreme Court ruled a telephone company cannot bar use of its lines by a competing service appliance in a separate case.
On a return excursion from Spartanburg to Charlotte, an argument led to gunfire and a fight on a car near Thickety trestle. Walter Haynes was shot and died. a Black man, Steciman, was tossed from the train and not expected to live. The incident, witnessed by fellow travelers, sparks local unrest in Spartanburg.
Thirteen or more Epworth Leaguers are stranded after a Colorado Springs incident where thieves robbed about twenty people of cash and railroad tickets. Del Wilson and Mrs Harrington are named among victims. Wallets, tickets, and baggage checks were stolen at the depot, leaving travelers needing aid from county authorities. General agent Hooker arranged passes from Glenwood Springs for stranded passengers to continue west.
In Culveraxm Ohio on July 31 Democrats supporting Bryan convene after a July 14 meeting. Ten men sign a declaration of principles and plan a statewide ballot slate to run for office. A convention is set for July 21 in Columbus to invite signers. Meanwhile Nashua Tenn reports engineer Cunningham drowned at Earle Pass while attempting rapids on the Rio Grande. He was 11 and son of S A Cunningham editor of the Confederate Veteran. He had worked on sanitary projects in Havana and under U S government direction.
Gen Joseph Wheeler, marshal of the forthcoming fete day parade in Newport, asks Gen Crane of Massachusetts to send the Second and Ninth Massachusetts regiments to participate. Wheeler values their prior Santiago service with him.
Secretary of Agriculture Wilken says Western state reports may overstate crop damage but he prefers caution. He notes the Great Corn Belt lies east of the Missouri and west of the Ohio and expects ample U S corn despite some discouraging Kansas and Nebraska reports.
Derise D Graham of New York completed a fifth trial by sending a barrel down the Niagara River from the Match of the Mist landing below the Falls. The craft, about five feet long and nineteen inches in diameter, weighed 165 pounds with ballast. It rode the rapids for twenty minutes, circled the whirlpool, and escaped intact aside from minor bruises to Graham.
Mrs Cortelia Sotkin seeks a habeas corpus in the state court after a murder charge in Delaware. Her attorneys plan to file tomorrow and expect a denial, paving the way for a writ of error to the U S Supreme Court. They raise two jurisdiction questions under state and federal law.
