Local society keeps busy with guests visiting from Tupelo Marks and West Point while Oxford residents travel to Birmingham and Virginia. Visitors attend picnics, rock parties and family gatherings. several families host relatives from Dallas Washington Chicago and Memphis for summer.
Jane Rowland married Dr Whitman Rowland at the Taliaferro home in Madill Oklahoma on June 28. The couple planned train travel to St Louis then Oxford and Jackson, with extended family visits and a future stint at a Sanatorium. Community notices report camp meeting plans for August and fundraising drives with local supporters and leaders.
Mary Paine Wendel and Frank Tate Harvey wed on June 28 at sunset on the Wardlaw lawn in a ceremony led by Rev. J. A. Christan. Attendants wore sunset colors, daisies lined the path, and a reception followed. The couple planned a short honeymoon before settling in Dyersburg Tennessee. Mrs. Harvey, daughter of Sarah Wardlaw and Dr. Robert Paine Wendel, has ties to Aberdeen and Clarksdale and studied at Ole Miss Agnes Scott and a Memphis business school. Mr. Harvey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jones Harvey, also attended Ole Miss and works with the New York Mutual Life in Dyersburg.
The July Fourth picnic at Oxford Camp Ground drew six to seven hundred attendees from across the county. Singers performed country and Zion songs as a noon spread impressed many, with several of the oldest residents deeming it the nicest picnic they ever attended. Hurrah for the glorious Fourth.
A letter dated February 4 1922 from Mrs A J Lumpkin to Mrs Calloway sends a check for 12 96 as tithe for the first month of 1922. The donation is designated for beautifying and improving the local Camp Ground, with hopeful wishes for a record year.
Street work on South Depot Street nears completion and traffic is allowed again after a two to three week closure. A final sand coat and roller pass are planned to finish the resurfacing and restore full city travel.
Camp Fire Girls spend a week at Waterford lakes with chaperones Mrs. Christian and Miss Dunlp guiding activities. The schedule includes swimming, recreation, dances, and prayers with eight to ten Oxford friends visiting Thursday. Weather stayed favorable except Sunday storms forced camp adjustments.
