Mississippi budget talks span two houses in Jackson

Mississippi lawmakers in Jackson convened a lengthy session as the Appropriations Committee outlined a two year budget totaling about 13.5 million dollars with the largest item the public schools at 3.79 million. The session included adoption of a code and a plan to create a state dog tax while tributes were paid to Miss Corinne Belk who died after a prior special session.

A special committee reports the 1918 1919 state appropriation needs totaling about 13.5 million dollars. A new financial institution named Guarantee Bank & Trust Company with 25000 capital opens February 2 in Oxford. Leader A A Graham of Blue Mountain heads the bank with S H Logan, former Bank of Oxford cashier, as partner. All stock subscribed. 90 shares remain untaken. The nest of long term loans and bonds signals needed local banking support.

Still Captured Gallon Still Reported Near Town

Sheriff Sneed Deputy Whitehead and United States Marshal White seized a reported still about 10 miles from town after a tip. They destroyed 200 gallons of beer. no arrests yet but information suggests imminent action. The zinc worm still had a 60 gallon capacity and was locked in the county jail in Oxford.
