Thirteen Mississippians departed for the Naval Training Station at Norfolk last week. The group includes firemen and enlisted men from various towns led by E McCaskill. Names listed include B HeMe, A Batson, J Parks, W Kem Clinton, and F Wat loaned. Each man will be paid $1 for each article.
The United States Government provides automatic insurance for American soldiers lost on torpedoed transports with monthly payments and potential larger benefits for those who filed claims. Automatic coverage ends February 12 while death compensation is based on dependents and ranges from 20 to 75 dollars monthly, with caps and schedules for widows, children, and widowed mothers.
The Local Board met in session Tuesday and Wednesday reviewing about 300 potential draftees. Roughly 75 percent were found physically fit for military service. the rest placed in class 5. The list includes Lafayette County residents who failed to answer questionnaires. Names and addresses span Oxford, Abbeville, Taylor, and surrounding areas with individuals from Gibbs, Shuford, and University locales among others. The board awaits Washington’s next call but will fill the current quota to secure 82 fit soldiers.
School progress is noted but measles have halted all vaccination efforts. Several residents including Mrs Walger Gay and family Illoh Earnest Taylor from Denmark and Mr Sam Starnes show measles symptoms or illness. Visits occur among local families as the community hopes for better health soon.
Washington Feb 19 The Senate agricultural committee reports favorably on the Gore bill to raise the 1918 crop minimum from 2 to 2 50 a bushel. Senator Kenyon says he will not be bound to back the committee plan. Senator McCumber has a House resolution for 2 75 a bushel and the committee probes farmers reluctance to plant under the 2 guarantee.
Oxford shipped its first car load of peanuts in January handled by Farmers Warehouse Company. A local market is established boosting peanut cultivation as a profitable diversification. Sorghum seed at 3.50 per bushel and two car loads of peanuts this season signal Oxford becoming a regional shipping point for farm products.
Dr. and Mrs J C Culley were surprised Friday evening by a large shower arranged by friends and patients in the hospital reception room. Gifts were numerous and useful, followed by a hurried call to the doctor who arrived to find a joyous, nonmedical welcome, leaving fond memories for years.
Mrs W C Wells aged 60 died after ten days of heart trouble. A Christian woman and Clear Creek Baptist church member, she is survived by a husband and five children. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Clear Creek conducted by Rev W L Hargis before a large gathering.
The Russian council of commissaries claims it will protest Britain's border closure and export prohibition to Russia. Maxim Litvinoff in London is instructed to lodge the protest. If Britain and the United States refuse to countermand, Russia will take repressive actions against Entente nationals in Russia.

Miss Dereloh Wood Fite, Field Secretary of the Gulf Division Red Cross, arrived in Oxford Tuesday and spoke to the local Red Cross Chapter on Wednesday at 4 30 P M. Her visit showcased efficient organization and boosted interest in Red Cross work already well established in Oxford.
