A Jackson dispatch reports Governor Russell plans to reclassify Oxford from city to town after census results show over 2000 inhabitants. Farr conducted the census, noting 115 deaths and removals and 95 Black residents counted returning since the federal census.
Governor Russell will issue a new proclamation reclassifying Oxford from city to town under the 1906 code. A census taken by Paul B Farr lists 1 807 residents, short of the 2 000 threshold, while the supreme court case leaves the merits undecided.
Washington December 25 leaders said after one month of the short session Congress has an avidity of work promising a cleanup of routine business before the March 4 adjournment. They noted progress in appropriations has been limited and presidential vetoes are likely yet praise the steady, orderly pace. The House passed the District of Columbia appropriation bill and several measures including repealing war laws and reviving the war finance corporation as well as an emergency tariff bill and immigration suspension. The Senate revived the war finance corporation and set a vote date on the packer bill while approving maternity and infancy care instruction measures.
Stokes V. Robertson, a Mississippi state revenue agent, received an anonymous letter postmarked Greenville warning he will be assassinated before January 3. The note claims seven men vowed to kill him unless he withdraws his suit against fire insurance companies.
Dr B G Lowrey of Blue Mountain and newly elected Congressman visited the Public School last Tuesday. He spoke to Junior and Senior classes on Negro Dialect in Southern Literature noting Mississippi authors Irving Russell and Booth Lowrey as prominent writers. A second address urged Americans to obey laws. Chapel talks featured Dr Motley and Dr J W Bell. A Monday night program included a cantata, recitations, songs, skating dance and a solo by Wilma Smith with Emma Johnson accompaniment. Visitors and alumni attended and spoke.

The Ways and Means Committee met early in January as farmers from the west and south pressed for bills to lift price declines and counter market stagnation. The focus of the first month was securing relief measures for agricultural producers facing low mood and depressed markets.
Jackson Mississippi December 25 Governor Russell explained the American Legion opposition to Mennonite immigration and warned Secretary of State Colby against border entry. He cited Canadian records showing the group as law abiding and religiously devout while noting concerns about独 schooling and language.

Mr. Hershell Austin, Ohio State law student, married Miss Esther Seeblack of Upper Sandusky on November 26 at the bride’s home. The groom may practice law with W. K. Seebleck. Austin previously studied at Mississippi University and taught in Lafayette County. They will reside at 60 West 10th Avenue, Columbus.
Mrs B P Leathers died at her daughter’s home in Minneapolis on Christmas Eve after a pneumonia relapse. Her son Dr W S Leathers of this city had visited her and learned of the death at 5 6 o'clock on Christmas Eve. Burial will be in Richmond, her old home, with Dr Leathers traveling to join the family.

Sheriff J T Coughlan and deputies raided a hut 16 miles west of Ripley discovering a crude moonshine operation. Marshal L W Lawrence fell into a 21 foot cistern during the take, was rescued, and the three bootleggers fled.
