Washington December 14 The jury found Mrs Lola A Henry Bonine not guilty of the murder of James Seymour Ayres Jr at the Kenmore hotel on May 15. The verdict came after under five hours deliberation amid strong public expectations the prosecution failed to prove its case. Mrs Bonine and her family left the courthouse together.
Washington December 14 The house committee on interstate and foreign commerce votes to favorably report the Burn bill for the Nicaragua canal. Representative Fletcher of Minnesota opposed the bill with one dissenting vote. Amendments limit expenditures to 10 million on presidential warrants and set canal depth limits but were defeated.
Senator Robinson introduced two bills to secure the return of ex Governor Taylor of Kentucky from Indiana amid the Goebel affair. One bill probes when a state governor may refuse to recognize extradition papers. The other authorizes U S marshals to execute papers if a governor refuses recognition.
Washington December 14 The cabinet discussed Andrew Carnegie's gift of 19 million pounds for education but no conclusion was reached. B H Colbert chosen by the president to be United States marshal for the Southern district of the Indian Territory to succeed John S Hammer whose term ends January 10. Colbert was a member of Roosevelt's rough riders.
London publishes empire population statistics showing about 100,000,000 people with only roughly 5,000,000 British born or of British descent. Nearly 4,000,000 are non British white. the colored population stands at about 342,000. Gryan critiques President Roosevelt for condoling Victoria and Frederick while not sympathizing with Kruger in his loss.
Kansas City reports R S Simpson aged 17 and Etta Teal aged 14 eloped to Leavenworth and married. Teal’s mother contemplates annulment but forgives the pair. Also noted: German professor Dehring claims cattle tuberculosis immunity via inoculation. A Canton suburb fire leaves thousands homeless after destroying 400 houses.
Rome reports the pope will not remove Catholic friars from the Philippines or replace them with American priests as urged by Gov Taft and other American authorities. The notice accompanies other updates from December 14 across U S papers.

A day coach caught fire but passengers extinguished the flames. Three old women, a young girl, and three men were among the deceased. Advance Agent Syele of the McPhee Co. was injured.
A light engine and wrecking train collided near Bolton five miles from Freeport on the Chicago Great Western line. PF M. Riley of Dubuque, fireman of the wrecking train, was killed. In Toledo two track workers Charles A. Wilson and August Busch were run down by a freight car in Lake Shore yards at Air Line junction.
Paducah Kentucky reports Third Clerk Mark Amerberg of the steamer Spread Eagle, part of the Leyhe fleet from St. Louis, drowned after breaking ice. His body was sent to his home in Grafton New York. A separate report from Wesson Mississippi notes W A Spence and Miss Jameson killed by a Central Railroad train while out driving yesterday.
A deadly flood hits Pennsylvania as rivers and creeks overflow cutting train service. Three people die when an iron bridge spans Lycoming Creek fails, the engine and cars topple into floodwaters near Williamsport.
The Lehigh River surged after two days of rain, flooding Allentown and nearby towns. Power houses and mills suffered extensive damage as seven feet of water filled facilities, washing away a bridge pier and destroying equipment and stock. Rail service was halted and the river water threatened homes and farms along its banks.
Persistent downpours flood tracks near Owego and Mesa’s switch on the Delaware division. A mile of track near Owego and several hundred feet at Mesa’s switch are submerged. Two hundred workers depart to repair damage. passengers receive food from a Susquehanna dining car. Telegraph lines are down across the region as the Susquehanna and Delaware rivers rise to record levels with extensive property damage along lowlands.
In six hours the Lehigh River overflowed the canal and adjacent tracks on both sides, halting Lehigh Valley and Jersey Central rail services. The backwater caused $50,000 canal damage and about $50,000 in losses to 200 homes in the flooded area. Electric and gas systems were knocked out and churches canceled services. No human fatalities reported.
Rear-Admiral Schley notified Attorney General Isidor Rayner that he is ready to meet in Washington on Tuesday to discuss options. Rayner doubts a congressional inquiry and prefers court prosecution, noting telegram offers including a $10,000 sum to fund further prosecution which were declined.
F W Dowd of Ottawa Kansas claims a stake if Madame Nordica wins her suit against the government for three to four million dollars. The claim stems from French government compensation for ships destroyed belonging to Ichabod Norton, Dowd’s ancestor. Dowd notes family ties to Nordica heirs Mrs J D Bowersock of Lawrence and others in the south.
Washington dispatch reports two court of inquiry findings on Rear Admiral Schley regarding the Santiago campaign. George Dewey signs both reports as president, with a minority view dissenting from the majority that condemns Schley on 21 points. Dewey concurs in facts but diverges on conclusions, and Secretary Long remains silent on details.
In Louisville Kentucky Dee 14 J L Ethel president of the Treadwater Mining company reports Bank of Sturgis robbed of 25 dollars between midnight and dawn. The theft was executed quietly and the bank opened for business as usual later. The money was to pay employees of Treadwater Mining.
A heavy fog descended on New York causing widespread transit delays as riverside passages grew slow. An earthquake was felt in Salem Oregon at noon with a brief but noticeable tremor rattling windows and dishes. James A. Fisher of Peoria died after long illness following a November collapse. Two African American men were hanged at Helena Arkansas for a July murder. A federal bill in Washington proposes selling the old federal building in Kansas City with proceeds to fund a new structure.
