Letters by the millions flood War Risk Bureau in six months

The Bureau of War Risk Insurance in Washington processed four million letters in the first six months of the year. Many letters arrive with illegible handwriting or missing information, causing delays in settlements. Correspondents are urged to write clearly and include full names, addresses, service details, and applicable numbers for inquiries or claims.

Before the Civil War University of Mississippi Greys rise

The University of Mississippi prewar student body came from elite roots and formed the University Greys in February 1861. They joined the Confederate cause, faced pressure from Chancellor Barnard and Governor Pettus, and earned a storied wartime record as part of the Eleventh Mississippi Regiment. Many returned wounded, with future Mississippi leaders tracing origins to the 1861 cohort.
