The Lafayette County Agricultural High School will open for the 1918-19 term on Tuesday September 3. A splendid program is planned with a flag presentation big basket dinner and numerous amusements. Professor Busia urged wide attendance and a full basket.
The third annual Mississippi Christian Endeavor Society convention will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Oxford from September through September inclusive. The public is invited to all sessions with noted preachers on the program. The first meeting Wednesday night at 8 includes a song service and an address. Secretary Karl Lehman will present the main address Sunday night.
Washington reports the man power bill, extending the draft to men age 18 to 45, passed the Senate with a work or fight provision. The measure now goes to conference with no changes except for the work or fight clause, and Senator Gore was the sole negative vote before withdrawing. The president would enforce the provision, and a striking dispute can be sent to the War Labor Board for swift decision.

J A Rountree reports North Carolina meetings backing Piedmont and Military routes for the Bankhead Highway from Washington to Atlanta. Directors plan a Washington visit Sept 6 to lobby Senators Bankhead and Chamberlain and Representatives Dent and Stephens for military road status and funding.
In Washington on August 27 Representative Rodenberg of Illinois denounced President Wilsons stance on renomination of Rep Slayden of Texas and endorsement of Henry Ford for Michigan Senate. He argued politics permeates all public acts and appointments since March 4, 1913. He urged withdrawal of Lever of South Carolina from the Senate race.
Dr. Richard Marion Leavell aged 80, longtime Oxford resident and former University of Mississippi professor, died August 17 1918 at his home. He is survived by a wife a daughter Miss Pearl Leavell and a brother S W Leavell of Hopkinsville Ky. Funeral was from the family home at 10 oclock Monday with interment in the city cemetery. A tribute from Daily News notes his scholarly calm and guiding presence as a Confederate veteran and esteemed teacher germane to Oxford and state history.

NewsReached this city this morning of the death of Mr. A C Ledbetter who was shot to death by a Negro. Ledbetter was an overseer on a Delta plantation near Shaw Miss, while his home was here with his wife and children. Remains will be brought here for interment. A detailed report will be in the Eagle next week.
Israel Vichnin headlined a Red Cross benefit in Oxford on the 27th delivering a stirring program that included a tableau by Mrs. Meeks and Beckett Fant and a rendition of the Star Spangled Banner sung by the audience. The Lafayette County Red Cross Chapter thanks the young artist and participants Mabry Oldham Bramsett Wright Short and Hargis for a rare musical treat and financial support.
The Red Cross Chapter of La ncay thanks the Camp Fire Girls and Boy Scouts for their ready aid and Mr. Price editor of the Eagle for printing free announcements. Residents of Oxford and Lafayette County are thanked for patronage as the net receipts from the entertainment totaled $93.10.
