A massive tornado moving from Texas toward the Southeast caused about 100 deaths and extensive damage across Texas Arkansas Mississippi Alabama and Tennessee. Memphis reports heavy rain damage while relief funds and Red Cross assistance are being organized locally.
A. M. Biggerstaff and Malin Johnson escaped the county jail between midnight and day by sawing a cell lock and breaking through a wall. They lowered from a second story using tied blankets after removing brick to pass through the wall. The escape, from a jail stocked against prisoners, left the jail empty and the jailer with no breakfast guests. Both were awaiting federal trial. a letter from Biggerstaff to his wife warned she may never hear from him again.
On April 16 Greenville Alabama reports rapidly rising streams at Chapman and Garland in Butler County. The Louisville and Nashville railroad main lines linking Montgomery with Mobile are submerged under water. Authorities have issued orders for evacuation and contingency measures as flood conditions worsen.
Early reports from the Central of Georgia road offices indicate a tornado hit Waverly Alabama at 2 30 this afternoon wrecking several houses. Damage also reported at Opelika and other points between Columbus Georgia and Birmingham Alabama.
Three deaths followed last night's Arkansas windstorm in Hope county. Robert S Hays his wife and their eight year old daughter were killed when their home two miles north of Appleton was demolished. Two sons escaped unharmed. No further casualties or major property damage reported.
Partial lists of dead and injured across Arkansas Alabama and Mississippi from Friday night and Saturday tornadoes. Names include Oscar Harris Ada Price Clarence Lazenby and Elma Barton with multiple seriously injured across Pike Yell Miller and other counties. Continued on page five.
Mrs. Wohlleben widow of H Wohlleben and one of Oxford Mississippi's oldest residents died April 14 1921 at her home surrounded by children and grandchildren. Born Katr Ina Smith in Munich Bavaria in 1839 she came to America at ten and married in Columbus Ohio in 1856. The family moved to Oxford two years later where six daughters survive. Funeral held Friday at St Peters Cemetery with flowers from relatives in several states. Her daughters D I Sultan Lillie Hudson J E Neilson D T Carter and Leonard Dobbs were at her bedside.
Belzoni Mississippi April 18 contract awarded for the new Humpreys county courthouse at Belzoni with a total cost of 200000 to J V and R T Burkes of Hattiesburg.
J N C Moffatt of Clarksdale called to order the annual session of the Mississippi Dental association in Jackson. Mayor Scott delivered the welcome address.
Snow storms and gale force winds sweep from Rocky Mountains to Atlantic states. Rail and wire traffic disrupted. property and crop damage reported across multiple states. Chicago endures worst spring storm with injuries and extensive damage. Des Moines and Milwaukee report record snow and fruit crop risk. Michigan hail adds to disruption. Missouri reports freezing temperatures and ongoing crop damage.
The eighth session closed with 31 diplomas awarded by Prof. Bush. A large crowd attended a bountiful picnic dinner after the ceremony. Valedictorians and graduates included J. C Edward, L. P. White, and Inez S. Fitch among others. Prof. W. C. Murphey spoke on The Necessary Qualifications for Success in Life, in a patriotic address.
The play It Pays To Advertise grew at College Hill by Lafayette County Agricultural High School seniors Tuesday night to a packed house. Performers did splendidly and carried their parts like old heads, with many saying they were better than the Redpath Artists who presented the same play here two years ago at the Chautauqua.
