Americans win sailing gold and Holden earns cycling silver

At Sydney, Mark Reynolds piloted his boat to sailing gold, the first U.S. sailing gold since 1992, while Mari Holden finished second in the women’s time trial to claim silver. The U.S. led the medal table after the first day with 80 medals.

Judge to rule on hockey stick attack case in Canada

In Vancouver, prosecutor says Marty McSorley’s February hit on Donald Brashear was an excessive act of violence beyond normal hockey. Brashear suffered a concussion and brief loss of consciousness but later recovered. McSorley’s lawyer argues the hit was accidental and within NHL norms. A ruling is expected October 6. McSorley faces up to 1½ years if convicted.

Ordonez delivers tiebreaking homer in Sox win over Royals

Magglio Ordonez hit a two run shot in the seventh to lift the Chicago White Sox to a 6-4 victory over Kansas City, ending a five game slide. Chris Singleton added an inside the park homer, and Chad Bradford earned the win in relief.
