Elks Remove Male Qualification for Membership

CHICAGO AP The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks changed its constitution to remove the word male from membership qualifications. The change, effective immediately, allows women to apply at about 2,230 lodges nationwide after lodge proposals, two endorsers, and a two thirds vote. The Chicago based group has about 1 million members and has spent over a million dollars fighting suits by women seeking admission. Delegates approved the amendment at a national convention in July, sending it to lodges for votes.
