House panel rejects Roberts farm bill defeat of direct payments
The House Agriculture Committee voted 25 to 22 against the Freedom to Farm Act by Rep. Pat Roberts. The proposal would replace subsidies with declining direct payments and cut 13.4 billion by 2002 while GOP leaders supported it. Five Republicans defected amid regional farm concerns.
