Ward named new extension 4-H editor at Kansas State College

Kathleen Ward, longtime editor and writer with a background in English, journalism, and teaching, is appointed extension 4-H editor by Chester Unruh. She will travel statewide to write about 4-H youth and help develop publications and visuals, succeeding Marjorie Tennant. Her view: 4-H stories should focus on people and family involvement, not just awards.

Blue Tractor Wins State Tractor Pull At Hutchinson Fair

A Ottawa man, Jim Edgecomb, won both the 1,000 and 1,200 pound class with a blue International Harvester garden tractor at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson. His one man pit crew was Darrell Cordle, stepping in for Owen Frakes who co-owns the tractor. Edgecomb, a mechanic for Sheldon's Truck and Tractor in Ottawa, started tractor pulling about two years ago and prefers the smaller tractor for fun and cost. The blue tractor was sandblasted and repainted to blue, with a modified 16 horsepower Kohler engine and added weights to meet class limits. Edgecomb and Frakes have posted seven wins in nine pulls this year, in events across multiple states, with Edgecomb crediting engine power, weight placement, and driver skill for their success.

Rot In Soybeans By BOB BOZWWORTH

Charcoal rot devastates many soybean fields during hot dry spells. It leaves black specks in stems and roots, gray tissue, and premature plant death. Crop rotation is ineffective. residue plowing and sound fertility help. Economists advise young farmers to rent land, use smaller gear, reduce expenses, and rely on Extension services for guidance.
