The doctor explains two main types sliding and paraesophageal, noting sliding hernias are common and often do not require surgery, while paraesophageal hernias can threaten blood flow and may need repair if enlarging. Weight loss can help sliding hernias. In a separate letter, a reader questions a darkened large toe.
