CHADD September meeting notes and local DAR updates
CHADD Franklin Caentyi chapter met September 7 for a presentation by Trucia Piffey. Teachers were invited to attend to learn about attention deficit disorders. Meetings are the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the West Franklin administrative office in Pomona. Ottawa students Bernard J. Didde and Laurie L. Johnson were accepted into the Cardinal Key National Honor Society at Emporia State University. The General Edward Hand chapter DAR met September 9 with Ron Clevenger speaking on preserving history in an album. The group sent genealogy records to the state DAR office and Campbell Soup labels to Tamassee School. Olive Buehler was welcomed as a new member.

Kansas faces $308 million welfare cut under Senate plan
The Clinton administration projects Kansas would lose up to 308 million over five years if the Senate Republican welfare bill becomes law. HHS estimates 22,900 fewer Kansas children would qualify for AFDC, 21 percent of SSI recipients could lose eligibility, and state funding would shrink for child care, legal immigrants aid, and food stamps while block grants replace federal programs.
