Rising harbor seal numbers spike along Maine coast
A Maine survey reports the harbor seal population rising sharply, with counts near 31,000 in 1997 and projections above 31,000 in 2001. Researchers credit abundant food, clean seas, and protections since the 1972 Marine Mammal Protection Act, noting possible Atlantic coast densities suggesting over 50,000 seals in Maine.
