Wrecked Red River Steamboat Yields Early Navigation Clues

Researchers from Oklahoma Historical Society and partners explore a submerged wreck near Fort Towson in the Red River. Dated to around 1838, the vessel began as a schooner later converted to river use. Only about one third of the hull is accessible, mostly underwater, as shifting sand and oxygen-free storage preserve wood and iron parts. The find, exposed by mid 1990s floods, offers insights into early river navigation and steamboat design before twin engines and railroads.

Postal rate hike eyed to 37 cents for letters

The U S Postal Service proposes a 3 cent increase to 37 cents for first class letters as part of a plan to raise rates about 9 percent. Officials cite a looming 1.65 billion deficit and cost pressures from fuel labor and health care while continuing to trim head office staff and curb overtime. The change would also raise Express Priority Periodicals and package rates, with the agency remaining self funded and not tax financed.

Ice Cream Bike Vendor Brings Nostalgia to Marshalltown

Daryl Carmer pedals through Marshalltown selling ice cream from a back cooler. He says the ride is about smiles for kids and neighbors, not just nostalgia. He keeps treats solid with refrozen ice packs and offers sandwiches and Popsicles, noting early buyers grab Popsicles before roofers buy them up.
